Signs featuring each dealer's Buy and Sell prices for these sets became a fixture at every coin show for the next several years. The lower than usual mintage of 1955 half dollars coined for circulation added to this frenzy, and when those coins were mostly withheld from release until early the following year, the price pressure on the proofs rose even higher. The quality for this year's proof half dollars seems to have been marginally higher than in previous years of the Franklin type. Gems are plentiful, and even Cameo proofs are fairly available in higher grades. Coins certified as Ultra Cameo exist in sufficient numbers to satisfy the demand from advanced collectors. The 1955 proof sets were delivered in two different kinds of packaging. Sets sold early in the year featured the stapled sleeves and more reactive plastic of the 1954 sets, and these were delivered in the same square boxes. In mid-year the Philadelphia Mint transitioned to a flat plastic envelope of a different, flexible plastic branded as "pliofilm." The five coins were held within sealed pockets inside a single, rectangular sleeve, and this was delivered inside a fitted, kraft envelope. The end result was coins better protected from abrasion and toning, as well as being a more attractive presentation for the buyer. Several DDO and DDR varieties are known for proof 1955 halves, though most are rather minor.
