Description: Disclaimers: You are buying ONLY the card stated in the listing title. I have imaged all three of the Hage's cards I am listing, to let buyer's know they are available. Due to a flaw in the system, the name of the professional authenticator and the certification number cannot be input for cards that are certified authentic. eBay needs to fix this. I have input a grade of '1' to allow adding that information so it comes up in searches. The card has not been assigned a number grade but it is fully authentic. From 1949 to 1951, Hage's Dairy of San Diego (noted mostly for their ice cream) issued baseball cards of players in the Pacific Coast League (PCL). Designated F65 in the ACC, they are often considered a single set. These offered cards are from the 1949 issue. Cards were issued with both blank and advertising backs. Soem cards were also issued with four different 'tint' variations, but I do not know if all cards were issued with all four. They are B&W, Blue, Green and Sepia. These are all the 'B&W' variation. All Hage's are rare in any condition. As of this listing, PSA has certified only 42 cards for 1949 from 29 known different. (1950 there are 57 certified from 28 known different and 1951 just 11 certified from 10 known different.) I say 'known different' because the full 1949-51 array is supposed to be 264 cards. That means a majority have never been submitted. Contrary to popular belief, the cards from this set were not packaged with ice cream or any other Hage Dairy product. They were inserted in boxes of popcorn sold at the San Diego Padres' stadium, Lane Field Park. This is the card of Max West. West had a decent 7-year career in the majors that was interrupted by three years of WWII service. He had five very good years with the Boston Braves from 1938-1942 (his cards can be found in all three of the Play Ball sets from 1939-41) and in 1942, he was an All Star and in his only plate appearance, hit a 3-run homer off Red Ruffing that provided the winning runs. After the war, he finished up with Boston, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh but didn't perform well, and then spent his last seven years in the PCL. The first in 1949, the year this card was released, he won the Home Run (48) and RBI (166) titles by wide margins and played with the Padres again in 1950 and then Los Angeles thru 1954. PSA has certified it as Authentic. The card measures correctly top to bottom but the side edges bear evidence of uneven cutting, as do the other two cards. It does have full borders, though. Creased upper right corner and another in the upper left portion that is visible from the back. Some slight discoloration near the bill of the cap that is more-pronounced in the scan than on the card. In spite of these flaws it still presents well, and more importantly, it is the ONLY example that has been submitted to eBay. Insured shipping is $10.
