Description: Handsome, detailed fold-out 1946 map of the Northern Hemisphere, printed more than 78 years ago. This map depicts the top half of the world — all lands and waters north of the Equator. It is drawn on an Azimuthal Equidistant Projection and names North Pole explorers Peary, Byrd, Amundsen, Ellsworth, and Otto Schmidt, a Russian scientist who may have been the first to actually set foot at the Pole in 1937, after having set up a scientific observation station. The map opens to 61 x 55 cm [24" x 22"] and is drawn on a scale of 1:40,000,000, or about 632 miles to one inch. It was published by the National Geographic Society as a supplement to the February 1946 edition of National Geographic Magazine. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
