This 1944 Newfoundland One Cent is a rare find in high grade condition. The small copper coin, with a diameter of 25.4mm, features a bust of King George VI on the obverse and a caribou on the reverse. The coin has circulated, adding to its unique charm, but remains in excellent condition with a beautiful brown patina. This Pre-Confederation coin was minted in Canada and has a KM number of km18. It is a great addition to any collection of Canadian coins and paper money, particularly for those interested in pre-Confederation history. This coin is being sold uncertified, but its quality speaks for itself. Don't miss out on the opportunity to own a piece of Canadian history. (e-Bay AI description- not bad, but won't cut it). Where to begin? Please- look at the pictures. Look at the clarity of the coin- on both sides. Yes, it appears King George VI has an acne problem, but who are we to judge? Joking aside- there are some scratches, but look at his crown that's still clear, and look at his hair, which is fairly sharp. Based on the description of Coins of Canada -2024 (42 edition) I would rate it as VF, which is defined as "Wear extend along band of crown; hair is clear, but no longer sharp." Is it perfect, no- like I said, some scratches can be expected from a 80 yr old circulated coin- but the detail is fantastic, very rarely do you see a coin with this detail at this age. If you look at picture 3, you will notice what appears to be a small Die clash- A die clash occurs when the press needs to strike the blanks quickly. Sometimes and for various reasons, a blank fails to be sent to the press. When this happens, during the striking, the two dies come in contact with each other and leave a mark, usually on both sides, but looking under a microscope, I can't seem to find one on that other side. Being a history buff (oh, come on, you knew I was going to do this)- there is something else unique about this coin. Understand up to 1949 Newfoundland was NOT a part of Canada, it was a British Dominion. One of the things that Newfoundland relied on was coinage that was sent by ship from the UK- sadly, the Commonwealth, which included both Canada and Newfoundland, along with the UK, was at war with Germany. German U-boats sunk as many merchant and military ships with the UK, Canadian and Newfoundland flags, which meant that Newfoundland had serious issues with receiving it's coinage from the UK- so it was decided that although there was still some risk of U-Boat attacks in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the risk was greatly reduced to have the coins made at the Royal Canadian Mint in Canada- if I remember my history correct, the U-Boats was only able to sink one ship with supplies and currency for Newfoundland in the Gulf, but by then there was another option to get the coins from Ottawa- plane.
