The Japanese bombed the Philippines the same day they bombed Pearl Harbor. December 7, 1942, "The day that will live in infamy". They landed troops in the Philippines on December 10. Manila was taken January 2, Bataan fell April 9, and finally Corregidor on May 6, forcing MacArthur's famous "I Shall Return" statement when he left. They used the Rizal Monument on the notes because José Rizal had been a Philippine patriot during the Spanish period, and they wanted to announce the new "freedom".
