[viii], 290 & [1] pages, illustrated with pictorial endpapers, an illustrated title page, 30 full-page plates and textual illustrations by Louis Slobodkin. Very good. Third printing. Laid in is an autograph letter signed by the author Eleanor Estes addressed to Mrs. Helen Zagat. Zagat established a studio for music, dance and child development methods. In 1947, she was ordained as a Unity minister and in 1955 published her best known work "Faith and Works". Dated July 28, 1946, the one-and-a-half page letter, consists of over 160 words penned on both sides of a 7-3/4 inch high by 5-7/8 inch wide sheet of creamy white paper. Estes thanks Helen Zagat for her "nice note" which was forwarded to her on "Fire Island". Mentioning the "Child Study Association", a movement that focused on child welfare with which Zagat is associated, Estes writes about the Association's efforts to provide better books to children at lower prices. As Harcourt Brace owns the copyright to the "Moffats" books, she writes that Zagat would have to seek their permission and has forwarded her note to their new children's books editor Margaret McElderry. Signed in full "Eleanor Estes". The American children's writer and librarian Eleanor Estes (1906-1988) won the Newbery Medal for her book "Ginger Pye". Three of her books, based on her small town life in Connecticut, were Newbery Honors Winners and one of them was awarded the Lewis Carrol Shelf Award. Both she and her husband worked as librarians throughout New York City. Her characters, The Moffats, were inspired by her own family and she based the younger daughter Janey after herself and Rufus after her brother Teddy.
