1940 Press Photo Navy meteorologists aboard Cutter Chelan, "weather balloon"

Description: 1940 Press Photo Navy meteorologists aboard Cutter Chelan, "weather balloon" This is an original press photo. United States - Weather Bureau. Much of the success of the Nazi invasion has been revealed as due to special long-range weather forecasts, guaranteeing clear weather for bombing and dry roads for tanks. The United States, however, has a long-range forecasting system that in many respects is even better than the new German variety. Above, Navy meteorologists aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Chelan inflate a "weather balloon". The box in foreground is a radio-meteorograph. Attached to the ballon, it ascends to stratosphere heights and automatically messages back a radio report of high-altitude barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity. Manu such reports, some made overseas and some over land, enable army and navy forecasters to predict the weather weeks in advance. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 6-30-1940. Part Number: pim01781 Please look at the images below carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us.  A scanner may see a photograph differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person.
