1939 S Washington Quarter, AU+, scratched

This coin is very close to being uncirculated, but it has definitely been in circulation. I see very fine lines here and there in groups and families that just don't look natural to me, with a twist that in a few places, one in particular - lower reverse, it appears the lines are the result of a rotating tool. Reminds me of whizzing marks where extremely small diameter bristles create a scratch "density" that a hand-held brush just can't produce. Light gold toning, with some overall darker gold to bronze toning upper reverse, and there are patches of dark toning on the reverse. Good mint luster but not a really shiny coin. Also, some old folder toning on the rims and reverse. There is a tiny scratch across the eagle's beak and into the field - looks like another staple accident to me. Notes: The tiny scratches from harsh cleaning are usually not visible to the naked eye and mostly not visible under low and medium magnification. It depends on the fineness of the wire brush used, pressure applied, etc. Under high quality 15X magnification, if the coin is held in the light at just the right angle and moved about, most any tiny scratches from a wire brush can be seen in groups or families running in different directions. You can even see whizzing marks at 15X. The scanner I use is largely incapable of capturing these very fine lines, and only sometimes catches the larger ones if they are running perpendicular to the light source. This type of harsh cleaning (and gentle cleaning) is/was rampant to make coins look shinier and brighter and remove purse slime and other debris, dark toning, corrosion, etc.
