Description: This is a fine Finnish 1939-1940 Winter War Medal with bar “KENTTAARMEIJA” that is in excellent condition. The medal is made from blackened iron and measures 35 mm in diameter. The observe is divided into two parts, a circular centerpiece and a 17mm wide border. The centerpiece displays the silhouette of a snow-covered rifleman that is surrounded by eight provincial coats of arms of Finland. At the top is the provincial coat of arms of Karelia mounted onto a variation of Cross pattée topped with a ducal coronet. At the bottom are the stylized dates, “1939–1940”. The medal is suspended from the original black ribbon with two central red stripes. Affixed the ribbon is the bar, “KENTTAARMEIJA” for a member of the Field Army. Above this bar is the crossed swords device for those who took park in actual combat operations. The reverse has an embossed conifer wreath around the border. In the center is the coat of arms of Finland surrounded by the inscription ’SUMMO IN PERICULO FAUTORIBUS ADIUTORIBUS FINLANDIA MEMOR’, meaning ‘For protectors and supporters, grateful Finland’. This version of the medal was awarded to foreigners who fought for Finland such as those who served in the Swedish Volunteer Corps. The medal was established on the August 2nd, 1940, at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki. President Kyösti Kallio signed the document Number 418 Finnish Code of Regulations 1940 which established The Winter War Medal honoring the service of those who assisted Finland in their fight against Communism.7405
