The 12-year-old girl was voted this years award by the Legion in recognition of her heroism in saving the lives of her brother, sister, and mother, overcome by gas in their Erie home, when a boiler exploded. Cevilla broke in the back door, dragged the unconscious forms of her brother and sister from the gas-filled home, and then aided her invalid mother to safety. She also received a $100 award from Kate Smith, Radio singer. Mayor Mansfield of Boston, is in the center background. Photo measures 7.75 x 10.5 inches. Photo Is dated 1937.
