Description: This doll clothing is original WPA Milwaukee Handicraft Project doll clothing designed for the 22 inch Italian girl doll. The outfit is comprised of a dress, an apron, an underskirt, panties, a scarf, and a pair of cloth shoes. The dress, the underskirt, the panties and the shoes are stamped with the WPA Milwaukee Project stamp as shown in the photos accompanying this listing. In the dress one stamp reads: “Designed by Helen Clark”. Another stamp reads: “Milwaukee WPA Handicraft Project sponsored by Milwaukee County and Milwaukee State Teachers College”. The number “7040” which can be seen in the stamped marks in the panties and the shoes was used from November 1937 until September 1938. The dress measures 11 3/8 inches from the back neck edge to the bottom of the skirt. The Italian girl doll that would have worn this clothing would have black hair in braids. The shoes have some tiny points of wear at the edges. The clothing is in excellent condition. We do not have the doll. This listing consists only of one set of doll clothing for a WPA Project Italian girl doll. This clothing is from the Dr. Charles Walsbren collection of WPA dolls, figures and puppets. The Works Project Administration (WPA) was a federal assistance program that put unemployed people to work during the Great Depression. It was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Congress voted to approve the WPA on April 8, 1935. Most of the people who were employed by the WPA were employed in construction types of jobs but people were also employed to create items by the Federal Arts Projects and the Women’s and Professional Projects Division of the WPA. The dolls were some of the items made in that program. The purpose of the dolls dressed in the clothing of other countries was educational so that they could be used in schools to demonstrate the customs, culture and dress that would be worn by people from other countries. Please examine the photos closely and purchase based on your own judgement as to condition and value. This item is inventory #11,615.
