Print Specifications:Photographer: Leni Riefenstahl (Germany, 1902 - 2003) - Internationally renown & controversial German cinematographer/photographer. Arguably the most famous female cinematographer/photographer in history. Subject: 1936 Olympic Games - Decathlon gold medalist Glenn Morris of the U.S.A.. The handsome 6'2" athlete went on to become the Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon and later would star in the 1937 Hollywood movie "Tarzan's Revenge". Riefenstahl had a passionate love affair with Morris during and right after the Olympic games. The affair ended when Morris left Berlin soon after the close of the games. In a famous "Olympic happening" Morris, after he was awarded his gold medal in the stadium at night, descended the platform steps and quite unexpectedly grabbed Riefenstahl, tore open her blouse and kissed her breasts in front of over 100,000 stadium spectators.Date Of Negative: 1936Type Of Print: Vintage Photogravure (Etched plate made from the original image - authorized by Leni Riefenstahl).Date Of Print: 1937 Paper: Soft medium weight, rag type, matte finish.Print Origin: GermanyPrint/Plate Maker: Duetchen Verlag, Berlin, GermanyApproximate Image Size Inches: 9.25 x 7.25 inches (not including print border) Approximate Image Size Metric: 23.7 x 19 centimeters (not including print border) Condition Grade: Fine+++Certificate Of Authenticity (COA): Yes - individual hand signed COAShipping: USPS with MUSEUM QUALITY ARCHIVAL PACKING This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint) vintage circa 1936/37 photogravure (also known as Héliogravure) by the famous and controversial cinematographer/photographer Leni Riefenstahl. Photographically, Riefenstahl was renown for the artistry and atmosphere she infused into her imagery. This image was created at the height of Riefenstahl's career and fame during her award winning cinematic/photographic production of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. The spectacular and lavishly staged 1936 Olympic Games were hosted by what was then Nazi Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. Historic in several regards, this vintage gravure print is from a rare bound photogravure printing of Riefenstahl images published by Deutschen Verlag in Germany in 1937, just after the Olympic Games and one year before the release of her controversial, internationally acclaimed film "Olympia" in 1938. Leni Riefenstahl died in 2003 in Germany at the age of 101.This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) from Finephoto. Under magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb" grid, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a high quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print. We list beautiful original vintage photographs and photogravures everyday! "BUY IT NOW" OR "BEST OFFER" - As collectors/dealers in vintage photogravures and photographs for over 25 years, we have acquired a significant collection and inventory of vintage prints which we maintain in two separate West Florida archive locations. To supplement and replenish those holdings we are regularly acquiring new collections and portfolios from around the world as opportunities present themselves. As a result of this ongoing procurement of vintage materials, when we feel we are "deep enough" in specific areas we will be open to accept offers which are reasonably close to the listing price of an item. So, if you decide to use the Best Offer option in those listings which contain one and make us a reasonable offer, we will do our best to accept.ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure (also known as héliogravure) is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU: We don't just want to meet your expectations, we want to exceed them with each and every purchase!
