Description: The NFL team Boston Braves was brought in 1933 and the new owner ( George Marshall) wanted to change the name so it would not be confused with the MLB team-- the team name was changed to the Boston Redskins-- they would be in Boston for that season and that season only before moving to Washington. The job of head coach was given to William " Lone Star" Dietz who was of German and Sioux descent- whether he was named coach to promote the name Redskins is unknown--- however what is known is that he & Marshall recruited 3 Native American football players to be on the team and promote the image---- they, at times, were asked to dress in traditional Indian garb and don war paint--- they were "Chief" Larry Johnson. Louis " Rabbit" Weller and John Orien Crow ( sometimes Crowe)--- Orien was a player from Haskell Institute. Haskell had played Jim Thorpe's school Carlisle in numerous "Indian vs Indian" exhibition games ( most famously at the 1904 World's Fair.. He was a skilled player and center , of the Cherokee tribe, and had been named to the All- Kansas college team in 1932. Of the 3 Native American NFL players he is the only one with a matchbook, card or premium depicting his participation. He retired after one season ,1933-34, and went on tho become the 1st Native American named Commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs--( 1961)--- this matchbook is unique and represents a significant moment , ( or possibly infamous), of American sports history-------
