Description: Detecto ("Watches Your Weight") Charm Box w/Complete Weight Loss/Gain Contents. Created by Jacob Brothers in 1929. Printed in a classic Art Deco design, the metal (tin?) hinge-lidded box measures 4" x 3" x 2.5" and is in excellent working and visual condition except for some rubbing on the top that has erased a small portion of the print. Inside the box is the complete original contents: (1) a 12-page booklet titled "Safe and Sane Reducing and Gaining"; (2) a set of 48 cards with lots of information about weight gain and loss, a 30-day reducing diet and a 14-day gaining diet; and (3) a booklet illustrated with 16 photographs of a young woman in a bathing suit doing various exercises with text explaining how to properly do each exercise. All are in excellent condition, though the page edges of the booklet have some tears and are somewhat fragile from being folded for almost 100 years. See photos. It appears Jacobs Brothers sold various types of scales for weight management, and this was an advertising specialty to boost sales of the scales. The box alone is great, and the informational cards and booklets are a hoot. If you thought weight, diet and exercise programs were late 20th and early 21st Century inventions, think again.
