WE OFFER TODAY A Rare and Very Unusual Reinhold Schlegelmilch German Lidded Luster Porcelain Biscuit jar; RS Germany Era; Exhibiting incredible raised gilt Grapevine Relief with other delicate floral sprays in the background; SIGNED by the Maker F.E.H.; Marked on the bottom " RS Germany" Blue Seal Wreath and Star. This mark commenced use in 1915. See also ES Germany, RS Poland, RS Prussia, RS Silesia, RS Suhl, and RS Tillowitz. Reinhold Schlegelmilch factory, Tillowitz, Selisia started production in 1875. The use of the R.S. Germany mark began in 1915; the Tillowitz factory closed in 1945. This exquisite heirloom is signed on the side just under a grape leaf by the Artist F.E.H.; so it does not stand out and blends into the design of the jar. Very clever. I almost missed it. The RS Germany mark on the undersigned was one of the marks used by the RS Rheinhold Schlegelmilch Prussia Company. The Mark is shown in Gaston's book under RS Prussia marks. According to the third series of Mary Frank Gaston's Encyclopedia of R.S.Prussia collector books, these marks were used by the Reinhold Schlegelmilch porcelain factories located in Suhl in the Germanic regions known as "Prussia" prior to World War I, and in Tillowitz, Silesia, which became part of Poland after WW II. The Suhl factory was founded in 1869 and closed in 1917. The Tillowitz factory was founded in 1895 by Reinhold's son. Porcelain marks included “RS Prussia”, "R.S.Germany" and "R.S.Tillowitz." Sadly, the Tillowitz factory closed its doors in 1945 ending a 50-year run of an incredible German Art form. The colors within the grapes and leaves are muted in shades of lime and “grass green”; with a tranquil granite and ivory ground depicting the horizon in the distance. The lower portion of the jar around the base depicts the green grass under the vining. A lot of thought went into this “art form” by the master artist creating it, whose initials are F.E.H. All the motifs utilized in the masterpiece are trimmed in a raised shiny 24K gold like relief (possibly depicting the morning sun shining on the leafing in the artist’s mind). The domed ornate cover/lid has a gold finial with incredible artistry in its decoration and design. The inside of the jar and under lid exhibits an iridescent yellow luster finish. See Pictures. Pictures are Part of the Description. I would have to say that this jar is in pristine antique condition commensurate with its age with no issues that I can see.
