Why, we’ve hardly had time to miss you.”+ The Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of England, and later of Great Britain, was formerly an officer of the English Crown charged with physical custody of the Great Seal of England. This position evolved into that of one of the Great Officers of State.+ The Great Seal of the Realm is a seal that is used to symbolize the Sovereign's approval of state documents. It is also known as the Great Seal of the United Kingdom (known prior to the Treaty of Union of 1707 as the Great Seal of England; and from then until the Union of 1801 as the Great Seal of Great Britain). To make it, sealing wax is melted in a metal mould or matrix and impressed into a wax figure that is attached by cord or ribbon to documents that the Monarch wishes to seal officially. The formal keeper of the seal is the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. + “The forthcoming absence from the UK of Lord Chancellor (Lord Haldane), who with the approval of the King, has accepted an invitation to attend the great congress of lawyers which is to be opened in Canada, in September next, will necessitate the adoption of the very rare expedient of what is known as “putting the Great Seal in Commission” for the time being. Lord Haldane, as chief las officer of the Crown, is also the Keep for the Great Seal…The putting of the Great Seal in commission means, of course, that a temporary commission is appointed to carry out the duties of the office, not the least important which is the issue of writs for parliamentary election and the stamping of a variety of documents associated with the work of this ancient post.” [The Ararat Advertiser, Australia, May 3, 1913.] Over 5,000 Punch cartoons listed for sale (store category "Punch cartoons") -- humor, satire and propaganda; combine orders and save shipping charges. Frederick Henry Townsend (25 February 1868 – 11 December 1920) was a British illustrator, cartoonist and art editor of Punch.WHAT IS PUNCH? Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. Punch was the world's most celebrated magazine of wit and satire. From its early years as a campaigner for social justice to its transformation into national icon, Punch played a central role in the formation of British identity -- and how the rest of the world saw the British nation. In its formative years Punch combined humors, illustration and political debate with a fresh and radical audacity. During its heyday in the late 1800s, it reflected the conservative views of the growing middle-classes and copies of it could be found in the libraries of diplomats, cabinet ministers and even royalty. In the Western world, Punch played a significant role in the development of satire. In the world of illustration, it practically revolutionized it. Over the decades as it charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable source of cartoon art, satire, but as primary source material for historians.
