Description: Two page letter dated June 5, 1911 typed by William Allen White who was an American newspaper editor and author, politician and a leader of the Progressive movement. Those who knew him included Presidents Herbert Hoover, Theodore Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge. The two page letter with political content includes the following: "What a genius for fumbling Taft is! Here is an issue on which he might have rallied the American nation to himself, on which he might have united his party and might have demonstrated himself a leader on a great issue. Instead of that he finds himself advocating a bill which has absolutely no friends anywhere, so drawn that it alienates every source of strength that he might hope for and so manifestly unjust that no public man cares to stand for it." This letter was kept by prominent American journalist and historian Mark Sullivan (1874-1952) in his personal files. Mark Sullivan was considered one of the most widely respected journalists of his day corresponding with Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. Sullivan was a confidant to Theodore Roosevelt as well as a good friend and confidant to Herbert Hoover. In addition to Presidents, Sullivan corresponded with many notable politicians, businessmen and literary figures of the day including Arthur Conan Doyle who he was good friends with as well as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Orville Wright and many other prominent and influential people from the 1890's to mid-1900's. Sullivan wrote and published between 1926-1935 a six volume book by the title 'Our Times 1900-1925' which chronicled the social and political history of America from the 1890's to 1920's. Sullivan correspondence can be found archived in the manuscript division of the Library of Congress and in the Herbert Hoover Institution Archives. The letter which is signed by William White is typed using blue ink on stationery with printed 'The Emporia Gazette' letterhead. Stationery dimensions measure approximately 11"h x 8.5"w with typical fold creases and some tannish toning from age.
