Description: 1900’s to 1910’s Joe McGinnity cabinet card. Mounted press photo. Transition period of photography and photography filing by newspapers. Cabinet cards taken by studio photographers were used and kept on file by newspapers during the infancy of photography. Markings appeared on the front and back that were similar to the markings on the front and back of press photos from mid 20th century. Practices by newspaper reference departments continued on from the old days into the end of the paper trail era. Crude examples of cabinet cards produced by newspapers began to appear in the 1890’s into the 1900’s. I’ve listed an example of a Buck Ewing Harper’s Weekly mounted illustration on a cabinet mat. The back has 5 newspaper articles mounted in the same fashion the press photos of the 20th century had articles attached to the back and sometimes front of the image. The newspapers did this for reference purpose when they reused the image. I don’t know if this is a type 2. Type 4. The image has highlighting and framing for press purposes. This image was likely used many times by the same publication. There are pencil markings on the back. Press purposes. I’m over explaining this item because I sold it last year and it was returned. I was told “I was a fraud.” I was told “it was obviously produced as a fake.” If you have no experience with collecting antique photographs, do not buy from me. Card measures about 8 by 10 inch in size. Stains, toning and wear. Press markings front and back. If you don’t understand cabinet cards are photos mounted on card stock mats, do not buy this. If you don’t understand photos were here mounted during the end of the cabinet card era for newspaper reference department purposes, don’t buy from me. If you don’t understand the manor of press markings on a photograph, don’t buy from me. Returns can be more than a slight inconvenience at times. Serious customers only please.
