Manuscript Folio US Army Doctor Univ. of PHL Ohio Miamis Indian Wars Click images to enlarge Description Exceedingly rare eighteenth-century American journal, totaling 181 hand -wriiten pages (255 total ) (8 x 7) of a post U.S. Continental Army physician serving in present day Ohio during the first Indian war campaign. A war which was against a confederacy of hostile Indians, chiefly Miamis, in the northern part of present-day Ohio and Indiana, restricted settlement largely to the Ohio Valley. I cannot tell you with any certainty who wrote this journal, but I believe it could be James Woodhouse who served in the army as a medical assistant, notably taking part in General St. Clair’s campaign against the western Indians in 1791. In any case... whoever the mystery author could be???...he is brilliant and his journal is a treasure.( There are four pages at the end of the journal that deal with the encounter of the Miamis Indians and the soldier who was shot) Page number of the journal of study or lectures begins with the title: Theory and Practice of Phyfic ( Physics)... That branch of science which treats of the cause of diseases…” from this platform this physician goes into a fascinating dissertation of myriad of ailments, diseases & cures of 18th century America. (These topics discussed, are noted in the hand-written index in the back matter of the journal) Once concluded well over 175 pages later, the author signs off with an emotional conclusion to his studies: University of Philadelphia February 19th 1787. From this point there is pause of multiple blank pages which leads my assumption that this physician leaves the University of Philadelphia as a graduating student or Professor, and ends up enlisting in the newly formed United States Army as a field physician, in the Ohio expedition against the war against the Miamis Indians in the year 1789. This is where the rubber meets the road in his life. Now embeded in the wilderness of Ohio with the 4th Regiment he describes a soldier I believe by the name of JOHN GRAY being shot by a Miamis Indian and the fascinating day by day care & examination of him in the field. (Allow me to pause here) I have carefully photographed these pages so you may be able to read and translate the words in full. Here in part is my abbreviated translation: May 24th John Gray Garrison Rapids of the Ohio 1789 A Officer in Lieut. (Kerseys)? detachment of the 4th U.S.regiment War wound by the Indians being on a part near the Great Miami under the command of Ensfgn Lupi ? He has lost a lot of blood and his symptoms now were as follows: Great diffculty in breathing, pain in his left side ( deeper description on page) and his wound became inflamed. I immediately bled him…and placed warm ointments to his wounds.( Several lines describing the status of his wounds after examination) I have found that the air is coming from his lings is coming through the wound and blood and water comes out at every cough. I am now making a catious search for the bullet, but could not find it witrh the exception of detached pieces of fractrured ribs…on the proceeding day the fluid by the appearance and smell being….” The diary of this continues day by day: June 5th he took in large quanties of bark, wine etc…” ( Must view to get complete list) June 6th Fluid discharged in great quantities, was thin, pale,…I unexpectedly found his skin dry and his ….great.
