The Rubaiyat contains pithy observations on complex subjects such as love, death, and the existence of God and an afterlife. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is the title that Edward Fitzgerald gave to his 1859 translation from Persian to English of a selection of quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), dubbed the "Astonomer-Poet of Persia." Fitzgerald's work became greatly admired in England and became very popular in the Unied States in the 1880's. Fitzgerald's work has been published in several hundred editions and has inspired similar translation efforts in English, Hindu and many other languauges. This volume is a joint effort between an English publishing company (Bernard Quaritch) and an American publishing company (L.C. Page) and was limited to 2500 copies and contains both Persian and English.Edward Herron-Allen was an English polymath, writer, scientist and Persian scholar who translated the works of Omar Khayyam.
