Robert Blakey was an Irish boy of 15 when he joined the British military in 1804 and left it in 1828. He was commissioned as a subaltern in the 28th Regiment and saw tough and trying service in the Peninsular under both Sir John Moore and the Duke of Wellington. According to Wikipedia -- The Peninsular War (1807–1814) was a military conflict fought by Bourbon Spain and Portugal, assisted by Great Britain, against the invading and occupying forces of the First French Empire for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The war began when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807, and escalated in 1808 after Napoleonic France took over Spain, previously its ally, and installed Joseph Bonaparte on the Spanish throne. The war on the peninsula lasted until the Sixth Coalition defeated Napoleon in 1814, and is regarded as one of the first wars of national liberation, significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare. Editor Julian Sturgis wrote an inscription, dated and SIGNED on the front fly-leaf. Fold out map attached at the back of the book between the last page and back fly-leaf. Interior gutters have cracking. First and last pages have heavy foxing though most text pages have foxing just near the edges. Deckle page edge. Spine has slight slant and cover has heavy wear. ascM
