Description: This is an extraordinary book! Firstly, this is a rare book - at the time I make this listing I can not find another copy of this exact book for sale anywhere in the world. Secondly, the quantity and quality of the photos in this book are spectacular. There is a wide variety of scenes in this book - natural and man-made - all very clear and detailed. And then it has very nice gilt lettering and decorations on the front cover and on the spine. This is massive treasury of rare 19th-century photos showing scenes and vistas from all over America as they appeared during the Victorian era, from the open ranges of the Old West to the colonial landscapes of New England and New York, to the backwaters of the deep South – and the many places in between. There are rare city views, rural scenes, pictures of coastal beauty, national parks and monuments, scenes of work and industry, fledgling mining camps and pioneer outposts, railroad views, maritime scenes, America’s famous rivers, lakes, oceans, mountains, cliffs, waterfalls, bridges, buildings and so much more. Something very odd about this book: I did find what looked to be nearly the same book - looks to be exactly the same 300 photos - but that one was published by James Clark New York. That one sold recently for what looked like around $500. Then I found one other copy - once again looks to be the same book - that one with different title - "Scenic Marvels of the New World" - different editor and different publisher - edited by G. Mercer Adam - published by Columbia Publishing Company New York. That copy has a leather cover and is listed for sale at $900. None of these are dated - from what I researched it looks like all of these were published in 1894. Size of this volume is 13 3/4" x 11". The pages in this book are not numbered. I counted the pages and came up with 318 pages total. So there looks to be over 300 near full-page photos in this volume. On the cover: MARVELS of AMERICA On the title page: A TOUR THROUGH THE NEW WORLD - AMERICA - SCENIC AND DESCRIPTIVE - FROM ALASKA TO THE GULF OF MEXICO - A Series of Panoramic Pictures Photographically Delineating the Superb Natural and Artistic Features of the NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT Including Its Historic Shrines, Industrial Hives, Urban and Rural Life, Lake, River and Mountain Scenery, and Wealth of other Picturesque Landscape Beauties Published by C. N. Greig & Co. London Edited by Prof. Geo. R. Cromwell. No publishing date shown. Here are the defects on the book: Some wear on extremities of covers and spine. Small amount of discoloration on the front cover. Rear cover has some bubbling and discoloration. Splitting inside front cover, with first couple of pages loosening. (Beyond that binding holding well.) Interior overall condition is very good to excellent. No interior markings, staining or foxing. No library markings. No torn or bent pages. All text and illustrations clean and clear. Covers and spine still plenty decent even with the defects. See photos please. Returns accepted with full refund if you are not satisfied. (You would need to pay return shipping.) Sorry, no sales to Canada or anywhere other than 50 U.S. states. Book will be well packaged and shipped at my cost.
