First edition, published by William Blackwood and Sons in London in 1893. Illustrated with a few b/w portraits throughout, including a black and white frontispiece (with tissue guard) of Princess Zeyneb.Engaged as governess to Egyptian Princess Zeyneb in 1871, Chennells's vibrant curiosity and keen powers of observation made her the perfect correspondent. With wit and eloquence she tells the fascinating story of her five years working for the ruler of Egypt during one of its most interesting modern periods.Decorative copper cloth hardboards with black lettering to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Rubbing to joints, and chipping to head and tail, corners slightly bumped. Rough cut page edges. Binding generally firm throughout, with only a pull to front free endpaper. Ink stamp to contents page. Pencil annotations to prelims. No foxing or tanning, except some offsetting to front free endpaper. Very good condition. 21 cm x 14 cm, 376 pages.
