Description: 1893 Governor General Silver Award is one of only 250 struck ( Medals of Governors General of Canada , by Freeman Clowery , 1972 ). Allan Wyon, the medal's engraver, was appointed Chief Engraver of Her Majesty's seals on 20th June 1884. The medal measures approximately 51mm. or 2 inches and weighs approximately 75.6 grams. This medal was tested at .925 Silver or better. (2.43 Oz) Silver, engraver marked "ALLAN WYON" on the obverse and "A. WYON" on the reverse, obverse illustrating the right-facing busts of the Governor General Earl of Aberdeen and the Countess of Aberdeen, surrounded by the inscription "EARL OF ABERDEEN - GOVERNOR GENERAL OF CANADA - COUNTESS OF ABERDEEN - 1893", reverse illustrating the Governor General's coat-of-arms, with inscription on three ribbons below coat-of-arms "FORTUNA*NE NIMIUM*SEQUATUR" surrounded by the inscription "PRESENTED BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR GENERAL", 51.2 mm, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation, created the Academic Medals in 1873, to encourage academic excellence across the nation.
