Description: This antique first edition (4th impression) volume is bound in green cloth with gilt lettering and fly decoration. The work features a tissue-guarded frontispiece and is illustrated throughout with tissue-guarded plates, several in color. The work includes correspondences and fly preferences for the different states of the US. Favorite Flies is a unique volume that compiles the stories and images of popular American artificial flies of the late 19th century. It is one of the earliest works to use chromolithography color plates. Today, the original flies used to create the color plates are preserved in the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, Vermont. The stories for each fly described in the volume were obtained through correspondence with fly fisherman and fly tiers throughout the U.S. and Canada. (Courtesy Wikipedia) Condition / Notes: This volume shows well with mild exterior signs of age/wear with light markings and rubbing to the boards. The corners are bumped with small tears. The interior shows very light age toning. The illusion didn't work binding is lightly cracked at the end papers but is fully intact and strong. There's an inscription in pen on the inside of the front cover which is quite charming. It reads "I will this book to my son, Billy. A very important book - to be given good care. It's worth is priceless, according to dear Daddy. Lovingly, Mother" Aside from a name on the contents page, there are no other markings throughout the book. There is a tear to the edge of one of the back end papers and signs that the back and paper was repaired/re-glued at some point. This is a great collector's piece. See images for more on condition
