A scarce, 2-volume work containing the writings of American Founding Father Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816). Morris was the author of the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, a signatory of the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. He also served as U.S. Ambassador to France and U.S. Senator for New York. Edited by his granddaughter, Anne Cary Morris Maudslay (1847-1926), who also published A Glimpse at Guatemala in 1899. Edward Martin ownership: Edward Martin (1879-1967) was the 32nd Governor of Pennsylvania and the first Governor since 1854 to go on to serve in the U.S. Senate. He had served in the US Army during the Spanish-American War and the Pennsylvania National Guard during World War I, retiring from active duty in 1942 due to his age.
