From: Amerika in Wort und Bild, eine Schilderung der Vereinigten Staaten von Friedrich von Hellwald, publisher Heinrich Schmidt & Carl Gunther, Leipzig, 1884. This view was first published in Picturesque America, which was a two-volume set of books describing and illustrating the scenery of America, which grew out of an earlier series in Appleton's Journal. It was published by D. Appleton and Company of New York in 1872 and 1874 and edited by the romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), who also edited the New York Evening Post. Rock Island, city, seat (1833) of Rock Island county, northwestern Illinois, U.S., on the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Rock River and opposite the island for which it was named. With Moline, East Moline, and Davenport (qq.v.), Iowa, it forms the Quad Cities complex. Founded in 1835 as Stephenson, it was renamed and incorporated as a town in 1841. Settlers were attracted to Ft. Armstrong (built on the island in 1816) and the cornfields of the Indians. The fort (reconstructed) was headquarters of operations in the Black Hawk War (1832). In 1854 the site was reached by the Rock Island Railroad, and it was there the Mississippi was first bridged (1855). The island was a Civil War ordnance depot and served as a prisoner-of-war camp, where many Confederates died; national and Confederate cemeteries are on the island. It is now occupied by military installations, including the huge Rock Island Arsenal, the U.S. Army's Armament Material Readiness Command headquarters, and the John M. Browning Memorial (military arms) Museum. Black Hawk State Park, at the city's southern edge, was once the site of the Sauk and Fox Indian capitals. Diversified industry (with emphasis on the manufacture of farm equipment) grew with the arsenal. Augustana College was founded (1860) in Rock Island by Swedish immigrants. Inc. city, 1849. Pop. (1990) city, 40,552; Davenport-Rock Island-Moline MSA, 350,861. Davenport city, seat (1837) of Scott county, eastern Iowa, U.S. It lies on the north bank of the Mississippi River and is the largest of the “Quad Cities” urban complex (which includes Moline, East Moline, and Rock Island, all across the river in Illinois). Credit Island, now a park, was a battlefield in the War of 1812; Fort Armstrong (restored) was established on Rock Island in 1816. Antoine LeClaire acquired the site (originally called Oskosh and later called Morgan) after the Black Hawk Treaty (1832) and sold it to a fur company headed by Colonel George Davenport. The first railroad bridge to span the Mississippi River was opened at Davenport in 1856, and the development of both river and rail transportation assured the city's growth as a trading centre. Davenport's manufactures include farm machinery, clothing, and processed foods. The Palmer College of Chiropractic was founded in Davenport by D.D. Palmer, who initiated the chiropractic system in 1895. Davenport is also the seat of Marycrest College (1939), St. Ambrose College (1882), and Palmer Junior College (1965). The Davenport Municipal Art Gallery has a notable collection of Grant Wood paintings. Inc. town, 1839; city, 1851. Pop. (1990) city, 95,333; Davenport–Rock Island–Moline MSA, 350,861.
