Syd Martin Condition: Mint State Dr. Edward Maris was a renowned Numismatist who became interested in numismatics during his early years in his medical practice. He is most famous for his works related to New Jersey Coppers beginning with his first publication "A Historic Sketch of the Coins of New Jersey" and began collecting New Jersey Coppers by die variety beginning in 1867. He acquired the majority of his collection in 1876. After studying the works of Montroville Dickeson & Sylvester Crosby, Maris announced his landmark Monograph which contained the contents of Plated New Jersey Copper Varieties. His work has been the standard and inspiration of many collectors ever since. This medal was commissioned by Doctor Maris himself and produced at the U.S Mint in 1883 to commemorate the bicentennial of his family name. Over 2000 family members attended the reunion and one could purchase these Medals for $0.75 each. A few were made in silver @ $2.00 each, white metal, aluminum, pewter, and a few were also made in gold at $25.00 each. The obverse inscription says "ESSE QUAM VIDERE and SE DEUS NOBISCUM QUIS CONTRA NOS" which means "To be rather than to seem" and "If God is with us who can be against us" along with the family coat of arms. It is thought a few hundred of these Medals were struck and sold at the reunion.
