Additional Information Produced by prolific American illustrator J.J Stoner this stunning depiction of North Dakota’s State Capital shows it only a decade after its establishment. Founded on the banks of the east bank of the Missouri River in 1872 by European-Americans and the Dakota territory would achieve inclusion in the Union in 1889, and Bismarck was designated as the Capital in the same year as this publication. Bismarck became an important trading outpost for settlers heading West as well as trappers getting their goods to markets in the Northeast and Europe. After the discovery of gold in the Black Hills to the south, the region experienced a spike in population further spurred by German immigrants that were enticed to the region for farm and dairyland. Birdseye perspectives were produced as marketing materials to attract merchants and workers alike and featured prominent civic buildings, notable residents, and other attractions. Their unique aesthetic and distinctive style immediately transport the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. These illustrations were among the most popular in the late nineteenth century and remained so through the 1920s. The city’s name was changed in 1883 from Swinton to Bismarck in an effort to make it familiar to German immigrants. Tight-knit communities were established through the town along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. This instantly recognizable map shows Bismarck in its formative years and is genuinely an authentic piece of American cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
