Likely printed in Washington, D.C. by the House of Representatives. 1876, 16 pp, 9.25 x 6”, 8vo, paper pamphlet. In as-is condition, with pages detached form each other. Text block remains complete, with chipping and wear to edges of pages. Toning and periodic foxing to pages. Some pages uncut at top. Small marginalia remnants to top of title page. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. An extremely scarce Hose pamphlet on the Hamburg Massacre, where white militias tortured and kill six African American guardsmen to intimidate local African Americans from voting. This pamphlet includes a speech by Robert Smalls (1839-1915), an former slave and Civil War hero who stole a Confederate ship and sailed it to Union waters, securing his freedom in the process. Smalls would later serve as a member of Congress in 3 instances between 1875 and 1887. A wonderful piece of history that is a perfect candidate for restoration and rebinding.
