(See Photos) Information: A scarce item of ephemera from the astronomical expeditions to the Transit of Venus in 1874 and 1882, one of the rare occurrences (2004 and 20012 were the next ones) at which astronomers all over the world traveled to remote location to make timings that aided in determining the distance to the sun and hence the size of the solar system. This detailed preparations by the British teams which were considering expeditions to the Indian Ocean, New Zealand, Australia (in 1874) and Canada, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and the American Seaboard (in 1882). Charts of likely locations, comments on feasibility of access by the Admiralty, and discussion of the techniques and instruments of observation and timing of the transits are included. A wonderful historical document for anyone interested in this important event in the history of astronomy (The technique has since been superseded by techniques such as radar measurements of asteroid distances. ) VISIT MY EBAY STORE FOR OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST(Click This Link)All reasonable offers will be considered.
