Description: Antique Victorian ca.1872-73 illustrated hardcover book "The Great Lone Land: A Narrative Of Travel And Adventure In The North West Of America" by General Sir W.F. Butler, K.C.B., F.R.G.S. With Illustrations and Route Map. "Fifteenth and Cheaper Edition", no date on the title page, the preface dated April 1872. With a fold-out frontispiece Map, and several full-page illustrations. One of the classics of Canadian and northwestern United States travel. "... Butler served as an intelligence officer on the expedition under Colonel Garnet Joseph Wolseley which was despatched to quell the Red River Rebellion in 1870. Sent ahead of the troops to reconnoitre, he travelled through Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota to Fort Garry where he escaped capture and had an interview with Métis leader Louis Riel. In October he was commissioned by the lieutenant-governor of Manitoba, Adams George Archibald, to report on the situation at the Hudson’s Bay Company posts on the Saskatchewan and to bring medicines and instructions for dealing with the smallpox epidemic there. On this winter journey of 2,700 miles which was accomplished in 119 days he travelled across the prairies to Edmonton and the Rockies via the fur trade route visiting Forts Ellice. (Man.), Carlton and Pitt (Sask.) and Victoria Settlement (Alta.)..." Published by Sampson Low, Marston & Company, London, ca. 1872-73. Good- antiquarian coindition, size small 8vo (7.5" tall) in red cloth hardcover binding with fading gold lettering, extensive wear to edges and cormers, light fraying at top and bottom of the spine, the corners are bumped. The binding is reasonably tight, no loose, torn or missing pages, no stamps or signatures, complete with 384 + 2 pages, illustrated.
