Additional Information Produced and published by Minnesota-based lithographer and cartographer G. Jay Rice, this depiction of the Dakota territories shows it in a period of significant growth and transformation. It would be another seventeen years before the region would be split and officially recognized as North and South Dakota. The Dakota Territory represented the northernmost portion of land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase and was experiencing rapid growth during the 1870s. The establishment of the Northern Pacific Railroad had opened access to the area, which was being settled by immigrants from Northern Europe, Germany, and Scandinavia. These settlers established large ranches and wheat farms that became the primary economic driver for the decades to come. This map's unique aesthetic and minimal style are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. The Territory was formed in 1861 and did not participate in any tangible way during the American Civil War. However, the Union Army did use agricultural products produced in the Dakota Territory to feed the troops. The Territory was split because an agreement on a State Capital could not be reached. Prior to the 1870s, much of the Dakota Territories remained a remote outpost for fur trappers, but the expansion of railroad lines allowed numerous towns and cities to be established. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills in 1874 further increased the population, and cities like Sioux Falls, Bismarck, and Fargo grew rapidly, becoming important economic and cultural hubs. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
