Description: Alsace-Lorraine now called Alsace-Moselle is located in northern France. It was created in 1871 by the German Empire after seizing the region from the Second French Empire during the Franco-Prussian War and as a result of the Treaty of Frankfurt. It reverted to French ownership in 1918. The French did not recognize covers sent from this area with German postage and treated them as stampless. This cover is from period 4 with two German N5 stamps and a French rubber stamp 25. Beginning September 1, 1871 the French increased the postage rate to 25 centimes, the Germans left their rate at 20 centimes. Due to the lack of stamps the French used a rubber stamp 25. This cover has several backstamps.
