Description: SENT BY CONFEDERATE CAPTAIN HJ CHENEY TO FELLOW CONFEDERATE VET COL JOHN PARK -- Cheney Served as Captain and Major Assistant Adjutant General of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry, Robison's-also called the Irish Regiment, Walker Legion. Fought at Belmont and Shiloh, the unit was consolidated into four companies and merged into Smith's 5th Confederate Infantry Regiment. According to Confederate Military History, Vol 3, 1899, Atlanta, Ga. Confederate Publishing Co., In September 1864, at Tilton, Georgia, a regiment of Iowans were guarding a blockhouse on a railroad south of Dalton, Georgia. Confederate commanders sent Captain Hampton Cheney forward on a horse under a flag of truce. Captain Cheney requested the surrender of the Iowa troops and the blockhouse. The flag of truce being carried by Captain Cheney was not honored and his horse was killed under him. Confederate artillery was brought forward, and shots were fired into the blockhouse killing 15-20 of the Iowans. At this point a white flag of surrender was sent up by the Iowans, and the blockhouse surrendered with its soldiers. -------------------- Major John W. Park; Confederate Officer in the Civil War. John Park was one of the organizers of the Georgia Bar Association and one of it's Presidents. He was the foremost lawyer in the Coweta Circuit.
