Quarto (9.75 in x 12.0 in) 236 pp + 244 pp. + 236 pp (716 pp total across 18 monthly issues; 6 issues for 1867 and 12 for 1868) Bound in 3/4 green calf over marbled boards. Binding shaken apart from backstrip (could be easily repaired; we abstained because its in a serviceable state). Minor thumbing to prelims. Contents generally clean and sharp. Illustrated throughout with many steel engravings. Overall, very good. A remarkably progressive journal for the 19th century with articles all manner of social relations, family life, Darwinism, the existence of God, mental illness, bodywork, diet, modern education, modern morality, labor reform, causes of crime, poverty, the plights of women and African Americans, tobacco use, corruption in baseball and much more. This journal is more like a 19th century version of 'Nova' than a derivative of any of the other typical 'phrenology', pseudoscience works with similar titles. Please email any questions -
