Description: American jurist Reverdy Johnson (1796-1876) scribbled this brief note in 1866 which inscrutably reads: “Gen. R. F. Thomas’s address is Easton, Talbot County, MD.” Johnson held such political positions as U.S. Attorney General (1849-1850), Maryland Senator (1863-1868) and U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom (1868-1869). He defended the slave-owner, Sanford, in the controversial 1857 Supreme Court case Dred Scott v. Sanford, as well as General Fitz John Porter at his court-martial and Mary Surratt, a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Written on one side of a folded sheet of lined paper that measures 8” x 10” (unfolded). Condition: Mounting remnants on verso of second blank page, otherwise very good condition.
