Description: Rare original CDV, signed and dated August 1866, showing a Russian politician, military person or diplomat. Signed in ink to Henry Stanley Pitkin from M.N. Nazarov . Not entirely sure who Nazarov was, but Dr. Henry Stanley Pitkin was a US Navy Surgeon during the Civil War, who also assisted Professor Louis Agassiz on a scientific mission around Cape Horn. In 1866 when this was signed, Pitkin was in Russia on a diplomatic mission Assistant Secretary G.V. Fox. He died while serving as surgeon on U.S.S. Benicia in 1874, at only 36 years old. This CDV is 4" x 2.5" and is in very good antique condition overall, with light edge wear.
