Description: This listing is for a very early printing of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, dated 1866. The book was published by Dicken's original British publisher, Chapman & Hall, four years before his death. This is known as the "Cheap Edition" since it combines four other Christmas tales by Dickens at his behest, allowing readers easy access to his work without buying five separate books. He explains this in a note at the beginning of the book, taken from the 1852 printing. The book measures 5.5 x 8 inches with 266 pages. Hard cover construction is stamped green cloth over boards with gilt cover designs. Pages have deckled (rough cut) edges which was a desirable form at the time because it gave them a handmade look. This 157 year old book is in excellent condition overall with a bit of wear to the corners and spine tips. Pages are clean and binding is tight. The frontispiece is by John Leech from the original printing of "A Christmas Carol." On consignment from a lifelong Christmas collector. Thanks for looking!
