This stamp is a later print because the edge design form a nearly complete line instead of showing the design. The color is still vibrant and bold. The embossing of King Emmanuel’s bust is sharp and still complete. The line perf 11 1/2 is verified to be remainders of Sardinia imperf stamps. During 1862, Italy’s stamps superseded those of Sardinia, and both imperf and perforated varieties were released at the same time. The perforations for the King Emmanuel releases were supposed to be 11 1/2 x 12, but someone, somewhere in Italy, perforated these incorrectly. This adds to the story and intrigue of this stamp. This one is hard to come by, and will definitely add some talking points to anyone’s collection. Check out the other listing for the Italy #17 in this store; it’s awesome too!
