Description: Circa 1860's stereoview showing banners of the A. E. Alden Photograph Rooms in the interior of the Westminster Arcade in Providence, R.I. The circa 1860's stereoview shows the interior of the Westminster Arcade (also known as the Providence Arcade) which was built in 1828 in Providence, Rhode Island and still exists today. Currently the Arcade is the oldest remaining enclosed shopping mall in the United States and was closed in 2008 in preparation for renovations to the interior. The Arcade was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. In the image on the 1860's stereoview are several hanging banners on which can be seen, "A. E. Alden Photograph Rooms" and "Alden's Photograph Rooms" and "Alden's Ferrotype Room's Best Place for Pictures." There is also a sign that reads, "Mason's" and a sign in the right foreground on which some of the words can be read but not all. What can be seen is: " Linen White . . . . Keeping C . . ." Printed on the right margin is, "Providence, R. I." Printed in the lower right margin is, "No. 6 The Arcade, Interior". Printed in the left margin is, "American Views". The stereoview measures 3 7/16 inches by 6 15/16 inches. The back is blank. The left upper front corner has a little wrinkle. There is only a very little bit of faint surface soiling and minor edge wear. The condition is very good. The reference number for this item is #4118.
