Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins it is time to move my collections along to new homes. Here is a really neat coin, an 1860 20 centime coin from Belgium issued during the reign of Leopold I. This circulated coin is comprised of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighs 7gm, is 25mm in diameter, and is 1.87mm thick. It has a really unique edging that I had not seen before when I first got it. Typically referred to as a “reeded” edge, the European call it a “security” edge and the mid-century designs actually used several types especially on the silver and gold to keep folks from shaving off the sides and selling the tailings. While circulated, this coin still retains good detail and would grade (in my opinion) as very good condition. The obverse of course has the bust of Leopold I looking right within a circle surrounded by the legend in French, “Leopold I King of Belgium.” The date is below between two 5 pointed stars. Below the bust is the last name of the coin’s designer, “BRAEMT” which was Joseph-Pierre Braemt. The obverse shows three small rim dings at the 12, 3, and 7 o’clock positions which can be seen in the photos. I love the reverse design which incorporates Belgium’s national symbol, the lion. The heraldic lion is advancing left within a circle with the value of 20Cs below and between two 5 pointed stars. The legend in Latin is “Unity makes strength.” This coin was minted at the Royal Mint of Belgium in Brussels. This is a really attractive coin, but as everything needs to find a new home, offered here at a fair price and with FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
