Bound in uniform calf signed Nutt. Complete with half titles. First editions. Featuring illustrations both in text and full page, some folding. Edited by popular author William Makepeace Thackeray. Under his editorial guidance the paper's large circulation peaked around 110,00. In 1871, the editing was taken over by Leslie Stephens.The first issue appeared in 1860, with a selection of articles on diverse subjects and serialisations of new novels. This selection comprises among other contributions, numbers of Thackeray's Roundabout Papers and the first serialisation of Anthony Trollope's 'The Struggles of Brown, Jones, and Robinson,' including all twenty four chapters between vols. IV and V. With the first appearance of the popular historical novel of Romola by George Eliot, from chapter I in vol. VI through to the epilogue in vol. CONDITION In uniform half calf bindings over cloth covered boards, five raised bands, titles in gilt to morocco spine labels, new plain endpapers. Externally very smart with light bumping and occasional minor chipping to head and tail of spine, boards only lightly marked, occasional minor rubbing to joints. Previous ownership neat ink inscription to recto front blank leaf, undated. Internally, firmly bound. Light odd minor spotting to occasional leaf, pages otherwise generally bright and clean.
