Thomas Sterry Hunt (1826-1892) was an American geologist and chemist from Connecticut. As a young man interested in the natural sciences he worked his way to Yale where he became an assistant to Benjamin Stillman and was appointed as the chemist to study chemical deposits in Vermont and then again in Canada. He published widely to academic journals and magazines. He is credited with inventing a revolutionary ink adopted and used on bank notes as a means of fighting counterfeiting. This 1853 reprinting of one of his articles in the American Journal of Sciences and Arts appears to be inscribed by Hunt to Orestes A. Brownson, a famous American thinker who challenged various protestant religions and became a key figure in the Transcendentalist movement. COLPAP-0977RT91
