Description: View of the New Custom-House, at San Francisco, California. and View of the Mt. Hollis Seminary, at Holliston, Mass. Gleason's Pictorial, 1852 This is a wood engraved single sheet only which was published over 170 years ago! It was printed in the issue of Gleasons Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion for May 29, 1852. The sheet measures 11 x 15 inches in size overall. It is in fine and attractive condition. The print presents two illustrated articles. Most historic is a very early San Francisco scene, giving a view of what the completed Custom House in San Francisco would look like. At the time, construction on the new building was to commence soon, and the accompanying text gives the architectural details on the structure. The architect was Mr. Bryant, and the contractors for the project were Theodore Adams and James Smiley, of whom it is written, these gentlemen are self-made men, and were among the earliest pioneers who emigrated from the Atlantic States to California; by their perseverance and industry they have attained eminent positions in their State. The engraving for this story is 6x10, while the text for it is 77 lines long, and concludes: We are glad that Congress has thus promptly determined to meet the commercial wants of California, in a structure that will be an ornament to San Francisco. The other story is on Mount Hollis Seminary in Massachusetts, with a 4x7.5 illustration and 65 lines of text, which begins: This beautiful building, a design of which we hereby give, is situated on an eminence commanding an extensive view of the town of Holliston, and the calm waters of Lake Winthrop. . . . Etc. ******************************* Background on Gleasons Pictorial: Founded in 1851 and published in Boston by James Gleason, Gleasons Pictorial was Americas first successful illustrated weekly periodical. It changed its name to Ballous Pictorial in 1855, but its success soon spawned two stronger competitors, in the form of Frank Leslies Illustrated in 1855, and Harpers Weekly in 1857; and these newer publications put Gleasons/Ballous out of business in 1859. Despite its short existence, though, the Pictorial occupies a significant place in U.S. magazine history, as a pioneer in the illustrated genre. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
