Leather boards scuffed at edges & bumped/worn at corners. Both front and rear hinges split at both head and tail - fragile. Gilt lettering deco is soiled from general age-related wear, but overall bright and clean. Head and tail of spine beginning to ship - binding exposed. All edges gilt. Gift inscription found on front end-page: Presented to Miss Jane D. Michell. By her friend. Front gutter split at engraved title page - cording exposed. Water dampness stain exhibited to bottom corner throughout text-block. Moderate foxing throughout text-block, especially to plates & their respective tissue guards. Some instances of pencil marginalia. All plates present. Binding is intact, but fragile at hinges. Please see photos. Oliver Pelton (1798-1882) was an American engraver, at one time working in partnership with W.D. Terry as Pelton & Terry. He engraved bank notes and produced a number of book illustrations. He lived in CT. Mary Leman Grimstone (Gillies) (1796-1869) was a British poet and novelist. She wrote about women's rights and one of the first Australian novels, "Louise Egerton."
