This pamphlet was written by Josiah Quincy (1772-1864), former mayor of Boston and president of Harvard, in response to famous historian George Bancroft (1800-1891), who had published a letter in the Boston Courier complaining of a "grievous wrong" and "groundless attack" that had been issued against him by recently deceased historian, James Grahame (1790-1842). Grahame had claimed that Bancroft invented portions of his "History of the United States". Quincy had edited Grahame's work, so this pamphlet responded Bancroft's criticism and sought to defend Grahame and himself against the claims of slander and false statements. Quincy published this response in 1846 and circulated it widely. COLPAP-0913-RT27
