1842 Seated Liberty Half Dollar Transitional; Small Date Reverse Of 1839 PCGS 20

Description: One of the rarest varieties in any series of U.S. coin! That means that this coin went undetected by collectors, dealers, and numismatists for 159 years! This coin would make a great addition to a PCGS Registry Set; only 3 specimens have been graded at PCGS in any grade! In addition to this coin, PCGS has certified a G06 specimen, as well as an MS64. A total of 4 specimens are currently known. Also known as the Reverse of 1839, and this coin is certified as such on the PCGS insert. Christian Gobrecht's original obverse design for the Seated Liberty half dollar featured small digits in the date, a design that was used from 1839 through early 1842; later in 1842, the Medium Date die came into use. The coin itself is a problem-free VF20 example that shows light gray patina over each side. This is probably the most underrated Seated Liberty Half Dollar in existence. When compared to the 1853-O No Arrows, of which also only 4 are known, this coin is an underrated “red-headed step child.” An 1853-O No Arrows in VF35 sold for $517,000 in 2017, while the VG8 has traded over the years between $144,000 and $218,000. A The specimen graded G06 (and also certified by CAC) sold for $246,000. If you compare the present coin to the 1817/4 Bust Half Dollar (of which 11 are known) with sales in VF35 at $282,000 and VF20 at $186,000, the value represented here seems obvious. Both the 1853-O No Arrows and the 1817/4 are classic rarities that everyone knows, yet for some reason the 1842 Small Date, Reverse of 1839 is still in the shadows, unrecognized by all but the most ardent numismatists. This will change as time passes and more collectors realize the extent of its true unavailability. How and why was this coin made? Instead of the Medium Letters reverse that was used from 1842 and onward, a Small Letters reverse of the type used from 1839 to 1841 was installed in the coining press. Make no mistake; this is a major variety. The coin is available to be seen in the Orlando, Florida area, and will ship via fully insured USPS Registered Mail or Express Mail, or it can be picked up in person.
