Said Lemaître (Augustin François). Henry II ( Mars 5, 1133 – July 6, 1189) was Count of Anjou and Maine, Duke of Normandy and Aquitaine and King of England. Son of Geoffrey V of Anjou and Mathilde the Emperor, daughter of King Henry of England, he participated in his mother's efforts to regain the throne of England occupied by Stephen of Blois, cousin of his mother and nephew of his grandfather Henry I. Made Duke of Normandy at age 17, he inherited the county of Anjou in 1151 and shortly thereafter married Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine, whose marriage to King Louis VII of France had recently been annulled by the Second Council of Beaugency. After Henry's expedition to England in 1153, King Stephen signed the Treaty of Wallingford accepting Henry as his heir. The latter ascended the throne a year later. Richard I of England known as the Lionheart (September 8, 1157F 1, Beaumont Palace in Oxford – April 6, 1199, Châlus Chabrol Castle) was King of England, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Poitiers, Count of Maine and Count of Anjou from 1189 to his death in 1199. Son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard was raised in the Duchy of Aquitaine at his mother's court, which earned him the nickname Poitevin in his youth.
