First edition published by Henry Colburn, London in 1840. It has a frontispiece plate in Vol I and should have one in Vol II but this is missing. Vol I has a further 9 in-text illustrations. Vol I covers a history of the horse, the types of horses imported to Britain, physical description of the horse, horse racing rules, race courses in Britain, racing calendar, pedigrees of the most famous horses from 1750-1777. Vol II covers pedigrees and performances of the most famous horses from 1778 to 1805, racing in Great Britain from 1805-1839, breeding and rearing, training and management, training grounds, jockeys and jockeyship, and the leading characters on the Turf at the time the book was published (1840), betting and bookies.Ex-library, bound in half dark green leather on brown marbled hardboards. Gilt lettering and library stickers to the spines. Scuffed and chipped to the heads and tails especially on Vol I and to corners. Boards firm. Library label to the front endpaper. Stamp to the reverse of the frontispiece in Vol I which is also stained. Small stamp to the title page, dedication page and contents page. Sporadic foxing. Pages firm. Condition: good.
